The Newmarket Handicap is one of the elite Group 1 races held at the famous Flemington Racecourse towards the tail end of the coveted Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.
Run over the sprint distance of 1200m, the Newmarket Handicap is an open handicap event and is one of an incredible seven group status races held on Flemington’s Super Saturday of Racing in early March. It shares the day with two other Group 1 events, the Australian Cup and Australian Guineas.
Worth a very lucrative $1million, it is the premier sprint race of the autumn and as such attracts a world-class field of contenders every year.
History of the Newmarket Handicap
The Newmarket Handicap is one of Melbourne’s oldest and most prestigious races, first run back in 1874 when Maid Of Avenel claimed victory. Originally run over six furlongs, the race changed to the metric conversion of 1200m in 1973 and has remained the same since.
Starting as a Principal race, the Newmarket Handicap was given Group 1 status in 1980.
